New York City Christmas Cards by Teek Eaton-Koch

Each year all of my clients receive a custom greeting card featuring a scene of New York City at Christmas. For the 2018 season I painted my most complex and unique work ever illustrating the final Christmas Windows of the Lord & Taylor Flagship Store on Fifth Avenue in Manhattan. The store is known for it’s classic holiday windows featuring historical celebrations, detailed animatronics, and superior attention to detail. As a child, and now as an adult, I shared the joy and wonder of viewing these displays with New Yorkers and visitors alike. However, the Flagship Store will be permanently closing in January. This card is my own way of acknowledging the passing of a New York icon and tradition.

Every year in December I walk the streets of New York taking photos and making notes of ideas for future illustrations. I pay extremely close attention to the time of day and angle of sunlight to highlight the unique architectural features and decorations of each building. I often return at dusk to see the lights and decorations at full splendor. Back in the studio, I carefully map out the proposed illustration on tracing paper using all of my reference material. I then transfer the design to a sheet of Arches watercolor paper that has been pre-stretched on medium density fiber-board. Then, following hours of careful painting in watercolor, a final scene emerges from the paper. After completing the main artwork, a unique phrase and spot illustration is made that will be used on the inside of the card.
